Choose an alarm around the person using it
An alarm is useful when the person can use it and someone can respond. Start with that person’s needs and preferences.
Ask what happens when the button is pressed
Some alarms make a loud sound. Others contact nominated people or a monitoring service. Ask exactly what the proposed device does.
- Who receives the alert, and have they agreed to respond?
- What happens if the first contact does not answer?
- Can the wearer speak to the responder?
- How would help reach the person if a door is locked?
Check daily use and coverage
- Can the person comfortably wear and press the alarm?
- How often does it need charging, and who will help?
- Does it work where the person spends time, including indoors?
- Does it depend on a nearby phone, home internet or mobile reception?
- What happens during a power or network outage?
- What are the limits of any fall detection feature?
Ask the supplier to demonstrate relevant functions. Arrange tests with the supplier and nominated responders. Do not make an unarranged emergency call.
Consider location privacy
Some alarms share location through an account or app. Ask who can see that information and who controls access.
Include the wearer in decisions. If someone may misuse access, seek safety advice before activating or changing location features.
Read our safer-device guide if a shared account is a concern.
Ask for the full costs and terms
- What are the device, setup and ongoing charges?
- Is monitoring included, and when is it available?
- What are the cancellation, warranty and trial terms?
- Who maintains the contact list and device settings?

How we can help
We offer personal alarm advice across Australia. This site does not sell alarms. Personal alarms are sold separately through our online store, keepyousafe.store.
The first conversation is free. We quote before any paid advice starts. Ask us to compare options against the person’s needs.
