Is my phone being tracked?

Unexpected phone behaviour can have several causes. Your concern deserves a careful look, even when the cause is not yet clear.

A symptom is not proof

Battery drain, heat and higher data use can result from ordinary apps, updates, weak reception or an ageing battery.

An unfamiliar app or setting needs context. Its presence alone does not establish who installed it or why.

A phone that appears to work normally does not rule out account access or location sharing.

The phone is only part of the picture

Stalkerware is software used to monitor a person without their knowledge or consent. Monitoring can also involve ordinary account features.

Shared accounts, linked devices and connected home systems may expose information. Someone knowing your location does not identify the source by itself.

The eSafety online safety checklist covers device and account concerns.

Notice patterns without putting yourself at risk

Do not collect information if doing so could put you at risk. Shared photo storage or accounts may expose saved records.

  • If safe, note what happened and when it happened.
  • Record the exact wording of an alert rather than your conclusion about it.
  • Keep records somewhere the other person cannot access.
  • Ask a support worker about safe record keeping if you are unsure.

Read eSafety guidance on collecting evidence safely.

Should I reset the phone or remove an app?

Get safety advice first if a partner or ex may be involved. Changes could be noticed or erase useful information.

A reset does not resolve every account access issue. You may need to consider accounts and linked devices as well.

What a professional review can clarify

A review can examine devices and accounts within an agreed scope. It can explain specific findings and any remaining uncertainty.

It cannot guarantee that all monitoring is absent or determine every source of information about you.
